“ONE THING YOU WILL learn quickly as social workers is people don’t care about your intentions. They want action, and they want results.” Professor Dingman paced the room and lectured while Marilyn tried not to let her attention wander to the pile of graded exams sitting face down on his desk. “This is why your bosses will want you to fill out endless statistics. They show in part the results of your work. Not all results are easily measured by statistics. So, what things may be objectives that are not quantifiable? Marilyn?”

“Contentment?” Marilyn guessed. He so rarely called on students that she was never ready for it.

“So how would you find out if your clients were more or less content?”

“I’d ask them.”

“Very good, self-reporting of clients is a good way to start. Anything else?”

“Maybe see if the number of times they complained changed, or what they complained about?”

“Interesting,” Professor Dingman waved his hand at them. “It is worth considering, how you measure the unmeasurable. If you get into research, there are whole papers on the subject. Fortunately for me, and for most of you. I have an easily quantifiable way of measuring your learning. Don’t panic if the mark is not what you expected, this is only worth twenty percent of your final grade. The final exam and essay together are worth sixty. There is time yet to improve. Because I like to recognize excellence I will hand out the first five papers in order of their grade. Papers after that are in no particular order.”

“Birungi,” he waved a paper in the air.

“Anna.”

“Cameron,”

Marilyn’s test wasn’t in the top five, but she was pleased with the ‘B’ she received, her highest mark so far in the course.

“You got the highest grade?” Anna didn’t quite glare at Birungi as they drank their coffee.

“Mother made me report on my learning each week when she called me on the computer. Translating into Lusoga and explaining to Mother is good study.”

“I will have to try that.”

“You know Lusoga?” Birungi lifted her eyebrow.

“Not yet,” Anna said.

Birungi broke into a long speech in her language.

“What did you say?” Marilyn asked.

“That it is Anna’s turn to fetch the coffee,” Birungi said with a bright smile.
